So you've found the perfect dress, booked the reception hall, made contact
numerous times with the caterer, assembled your wedding party, diligently
having planned and planned every intimate detail of the whirlwind date
that begins the rest of your life forever. But wait… there is one
more thing, hmmm, what could it be?! As you sit stumped and overwhelmed,
it is brought to your attention that you will be walking down the aisle
to the sound of your own clippety clop! That's right, like many brides
before you, and many more to come, you have left your wedding ceremony
music on the back burner as more pressing details consumed your every
waking hour.
Historically, music has accompanied social gatherings of great significance
and formality, such as weddings, banquets, and receptions. Just like vintage
wine or lush bouquets of roses, live music caters to you and your guests,
creating the essential ambiance that you desire for your special day.
The wedding ceremony is traditionally associated with an abundance of
anticipation, breathtaking joy, release of emotions, and fulfillment.
One common link between all of the above is that music heralds the arrival
of each precious moment. Prior to the ceremony, the musician(s) will perform
preludes, which are also known as the musical selections that are played
before the ceremony beings. Thereafter, the bridal party is announced
by yet another musical cue known as the Processional, enhancing their
beauty and joy. The Signing of the Register is also accompanied by musical
presence, providing a sense of closure to the wedding ceremony. Last but
not least, the fulfillment comes with the final musical cue, also known
as the Recessional. It's message… Party time!
Professional musicians will become an invaluable resource, providing
musical consultation, assisting you and your fiancé in the selection
of your wedding music. You'll find that one of the most painless items
to strike off your list will be selecting the perfect music for your wedding.
Keep in mind that these musicians have a wealth of experience and insight
regarding complimentary music for your wedding. Depending on the location
of the ceremony, certain styles of music may be discouraged, such as pop
songs in churches, and so on.
The most popular options when choosing the instruments are string quartets
or trios, a vocal soloist accompanied by piano or organ, harp, classical
guitar and flute. At my wedding, my husband and I chose to have an organist
and our celebrant happened to be a professional singer! As a professional
singer myself, I was completely happy with their performances, and was
enthralled by all of the emotions and music that carried me away.
Professional musicians offer more than just consultation and performance
services. Common misconceptions can be easily waived, as professional
musicians own formal performance attire, and have a distinct work ethic.
For the caliber of the services that musicians provide, they set reasonable
rates for their work, and are considered equals to your florist or officiator
who also provides a quality service and presents their fees. Musicians
may expect a deposit for their services at the consultation, and may charge
additional fees for attending the wedding rehearsal or travel expenses.
The question begs to be asked, "That sounds great, but where do
I find these musicians?". The answer is as close as your fingertips!
Most cities have a thriving music community, often times found when searching
on the Internet for musician referral agencies in your area, or established
wedding magazines with directories, such as "BridalSpace.com". Reception
venues are also a good source for locating live musicians. Be sure to
be specific when you describe what kind of music you are looking for,
for example, a string quartet, as they commonly have contact information
to fulfill such a request.
