Wedding Photojournalism

"What is wedding photojournalism?", asked a couple who came
to me to arrange their wedding photo shoot.
Wedding photojournalism resembles the way news photographer cover events,
all of which lead to spontaneous reactions to unfolding moments. To shoot
photojournalistic wedding images successfully requires some special skills.
First, you must keep an open mind, and an eye out for the unusual. Second,
you need to have the technical skills to be able to shoot without thinking
about equipment, exposure or lighting. Finally, to capture those unique
moments at the right expression, the right composition, the right lighting,
you must be totally aware of everything that is going on around you at
all times. Doing this effectively requires anticipating the special moments
of a wedding, and being ready before they happen.
Wedding photojournalism focuses on capturing the joy and emotion the
bride and groom are experiencing on the wedding day. These could be the
emotions on people's faces, and even details like the lace on a bride's
dress.
Shooting wedding photojournalism might include some pictures taken as
the bride transform herself with makeup, jewelry, etc; or the mom's reaction
to see her little girl as a bride. A classic shot for any wedding photojournalism
is one of the bride getting ready for the wedding, usually called the
"dressing" shot. The pictures should convey a sense of intimacy,
and are usually made with the bride, and maid of honor, with close friends
or with a group that include the mother and perhaps even the mother-in-law
to be. Tenderness, affection, and caring are the emotions the wedding
photojournalism photographs should portray of the bride and mother. The
emotions between father and daughter on the wedding day are strong, and
wedding photojournalism captures that photographs that convey the feelings
of warmth and affection they share.
