I had just felt ready to start dating again after a heart wrenching break up the year before. After various failed attempts at finding someone that I felt had potential for a relationship, I planned an impromptu trip to Trinidad at Christmas last year. I felt I needed to get away and "lick my wounds" so to speak. After spending some time with family a group of us rented a hacienda on the sister island of Tobago. When we got to the island, we were in need of a phone and walked up the street to the first hotel we could find. Upon entering the hotel I was shocked to find my ex-boyfriend reading a book outside one of the rooms. It became clear to me that the reason he left me was to pursue a relationship with an ex-friend of mine who was also there. Although I felt our break up was for the best, I was extremely hurt and upset. After this, I was pretty shaken up and my family and friends decided that night to take me out on the town and cancel the plans we had made previously. We ended up at a local bar/dance club and I was surprised when I walked in to see a person wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. Anyhow, a couple of the guys from that group struck up a conversation with my cousin and soon I was speaking to my soon to be fiancé. He had already met someone there he was interested in and was trying to set me up with his friend. Anyhow, his friend was long forgotten after a few minutes of conversation with me. The few minutes turned into hours and we spent the rest of the vacation getting to know each other. He was from Ottawa and decided we would get together when we got back home. Well, after the second date at home he jokingly said he was going to marry me. Little did I know it would soon be coming true, and that's our story!
