Outdoor Wedding Reception

Q: I am looking to plan an outdoor wedding reception for 150-200 people for next summer, but I have no idea where to start. What things do I need to look out for when renting a tent? Any tips would be appreciated.

A: Renting a tent is a fun idea, but there's a lot of work associated with it, isn't there? Here are some pointers:

  • Make sure the rental company indicates (on paper) that you will be getting a white tent that is "wedding quality". There are two grades of tents that are generally used: wedding quality, and corporate quality. Corporate quality tents have little holes or tears in them and appear to be a bit dirty from overuse. Wedding quality tents are in much better shape.

  • Don't get caught in booking an oversized tent. For 150 - 200 people, you should book a 20x30 or 30x40 at the most.

  • Ensure that the tent will be pitched at least 24 hours prior to your wedding. That way, you can pop in and look at it before hand. It also gives you a chance to ensure that it gets there at all!

  • Rentals: there are so many styles of cutlery, tables, linens, etc to select from. Prices vary from company to company but you shouldn't necessarily choose the cheapest price. Book an appointment to see the stuff you're renting... make sure it's in good condition.
