Q: When you sign the marriage licence, do you use your new last name or your maiden name? A: The licence is signed by all parties under their current legal names; in other words, you should use your maiden name if that appears on your driver's license, health card etc. When it is a second marriage and the bride goes by her former married name, then this is the name she should sign with. That said, a signature is just a mark, and for some people it could be an "X" or a squiggly line, or even a symbol. If you recall, the singer "Prince" now uses a symbol as his name, and the same such situation applies here...you can sign using your mark, or signature, even if it is unreadable as a name. |
