The Honeymoon Tradition

The term "honeymoon" is believed to have been passed down to us from the ancient past. In Babylon, 4000 years ago, it was common practice for the bride's father to supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink for a month after the wedding. Mead is a "honey wine." Known for it's intoxicating sweet flavour and it's magical properties to help increase fertility and general well being, mead was widely accepted as a generous gift from the gods. The Babylonians use the "lunar calendar" so the son-in-law had free honey wine for a full lunar cycle. Hence the term we know today as the "honeymoon".

Undoubtedly this is a beautiful and romantic tradition. Times have changed. Today the honeymoon is associated mostly with a one or two week vacation after the wedding. The truth is Honeymoons can be taken at anytime. Either a weekend at home or at the cottage to get away from life's daily stress. The idea is to create quality time for one another at least 3 times a year to maintain a healthy life and a healthy marriage. Mead is optional...
