The Gate of Honor
A Gate of Honor is erected in front of the bride's parents' house. It
consists of a long garland of branches put up as an inverted-U to form
an archway. The branches are made from pine, but beach or oak are sometimes
used as well. The Gate can be attached around the doorway or left freestanding
somewhere across the path leading to the house. This Gate of Honor is
also erected when a married couple celebrates their silver (or later)
anniversary.
The Wedding Party
Sometime during the evening, the groom will leave the party for a short
time. This should be the first time he leaves his wife since entering
the place where the party is held. While the groom is temporarily away,
all the men go up to the bride and kiss her. The same thing happens the
first time the bride leaves the room.
After dinner, when dancing, the family of the groom will suddenly circle
around the groom and get closer and closer. When the groom is completely
encircled, they will pull out a pair of scissors and cut his tie and socks.
The Wedding Cake
The wedding cake is traditionally a tall circular cake based on almond
paste. It is called a "conucopia" (overflødighedshorn) or simply
"circular cake" (kransekage). Some people now prefer the multi-tiered
cake held up by pillars, which is used in many other countries. The newlyweds
then cut the cake together, before serving it to the party. Everyone must
eat a part of it, otherwise it is said to bring bad luck to the matrimony.
